Editorial Services

So you have a manuscript.  Now what?  Some manuscripts are rough and some are refined.  Below is a list of the editorial services we offer and what each entails.

How much help do you need?

Editorial Analysis - I have no idea what I need.
Copyediting - It's pretty much ready to go.
Line Editing - I'm not an experienced author.
Content Editing - I could use a fair amount of help.
Specialized Content Editing - English is not my first language.
Book Development Editing - At least I got it all in the same shoebox.
Manuscript Medic - I didn't know it would be this much work!

Indexing - My non-fiction work needs a professional index

Through each of the levels of editing, you, the author, will be involved accepting changes, rewriting sentences, resolving queries and handling other revisions as suggested by the editor.

Editorial Analysis

This is where we determine if your manuscript meets our Quality and Content Standards and the level of editorial services we feel your manuscript needs.  Most publishing houses charge upwards of $299 for this, but because everyone who submits a manuscript for publication by TILC goes through this process, we offer this service for FREE

Line Editing

Sometimes a manuscript needs more work than others need. When heavy copyediting is required, an editor will check the manuscript and correct it of a more serious volume of errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style.

The editor will also address sentence structure, syntax, and word choice and will make a small degree of recommendations for improving the overall readability of the work.

Timeline: 2-3 weeks
Cost: $0.0255 per word

Example: 178 pages; 250 words per page (average); approximately 44,500 words; 44,500 x $0.0255 per word; approximate cost of this service: $1135.00.

Timeline: 2-3 weeks
Cost: $0.035 per word

Example: 178 pages; 250 words per page (average); approximately 44,500 words; 44,500 x $0.035 per word; approximate cost of this service: $1557.50.

Specialized Content Editing

Specialized Content Editing is the ideal choice either for books that are translations from another language into English, or for books written by authors for whom English is their second language. Works that fit into this category of need do not require as much work as Book Development Editing, yet they need more work than is standard with regular Content Editing.

Timeline: 2-3 weeks
Cost: $0.0375 per word

Example: 178 pages; 250 words per page (average); approximately 44,500 words; 44,500 x $0.0375 per word; approximate cost of this service: $1668.75

Book Development Editing

This level of editing combines all of the editing services found at the Content Editing level. This level of editing adds a great deal more specialized services for books that need help on a nuts-and-bolts level.

Where help is needed on works of fiction for being amenable to the genre of the work, and on plot, character development, dialogue, pace, voice, and other fundamental elements, Book Development Editing is essential.

For nonfiction works, the book development editor will analyze the scope and content of the work for its fit for the target market, accuracy, and comprehensiveness of the information, organization, and inclusion and use of illustrations, charts, and tables.

This level of editing requires a great deal of involvement from the author as the editor will be sending recommendations and modifications to the author for them to make other changes or accept those recommended.

As the author, you may look at what is coming from the editor and decide that the time required to make the recommended changes is outside of what you have available to devote to the project, or you may decide that you need the help of an outside party to do everything necessary. If so, the next level of editing, Manuscript Medic, is an option to consider.

Once the major modifications are made, a copy editor will go through and perform that level of editing, ensuring that all of the key factors of the manuscript meet TILC and industry standards.

Timeline: 7-12 weeks (on our end; depending on the level of work needed)
Cost: $0.065 per word

Example: 178 pages; 250 words per page (average); approximately 44,500 words; 44,500 x $0.065 per word; approximate cost of this service: $2892.50

Manuscript Medic

Examining and considering all of the advice and recommendations of your book development editor will often take a great deal of time and effort. Rewriting and reorganizing your manuscript to bring it up to snuff may be more than you are prepared to do right now. It may require more time or skill than you currently have available. The Manuscript Medic is the optimum choice under these circumstances.

This level of editorial service brings in an individual with the necessary time, skills, abilities, and experience to weed through all of the information from the book development editor, make the necessary major changes (always with the author’s approval), and get the work completed and ready for final copyediting, which is included with this editorial service.

The amount and degree of work needed at this level varies widely and therefore an estimated price will be available once Book Development Editing is completed.

Example: 178 pages; 250 words per page (average); approximately 44,500 words; 44,500 x $0.015 per word; approximate cost of this service: $667.50.
